Books about war and family

Sam Hughes is seventeen, growing up in Kentucky, trying to understand a father who died in Vietnam before she was born. Her uncle, a veteran, lives with the family, and the war is present in the house the way it’s present in a lot of houses: felt in everything, spoken about in nothing. Mason writes about the American home front after Vietnam with the specificity of someone who knows what that particular domestic silence sounds like, and the novel’s ending, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, is one of the most quietly devastating in American fiction. This is the book I’d give anyone who grew up in the shadow of a war that was never explained to them.

McCain traces three generations of military service (his grandfather, his father, himself) and writes about the years he spent as a prisoner of war in Hanoi. It’s about what it means to inherit a name like that: the weight of a tradition, and what a son does with a father’s legacy when the father is exceptional, and he’s still finding his own footing. I find myself thinking about it whenever I think about inheritance, the military kind, and the other kinds.

Admiral Zumwalt ordered the use of Agent Orange to clear riverbanks in Vietnam. His son patrolled Vietnamese rivers and later developed cancer, which both men believed was connected to his exposure. They wrote this book together, alternating voices, as the son was dying. It is about war and Agent Orange and what it costs a father to face the possibility that an order intended to protect sailors harmed his own son. I couldn’t read it without thinking about my own father and what Agent Orange did to him decades after he came home.

Nine-year-old Oskar Schell lost his father on September 11 and is trying to find a lock that fits a key he found in a vase among his father’s things. The novel is also about Oskar’s grandparents, survivors of the Dresden bombing, which means it follows three generations trying to live with catastrophe. Foer’s formal experiments (blank pages, photographs, text that breaks apart) work here because they show what grief does when ordinary language gives out. The Dresden chapters are what put it on this list: Oskar’s loss unfolds alongside a much older history his family has never finished living through.

Stevens, an English butler, takes a road trip through the English countryside and slowly recognizes that he gave his life to a man who didn’t deserve it. The scene I keep coming back to is smaller: his own father, also a butler, collapses and dies during a formal dinner downstairs, and Stevens finishes serving the guests before he goes to him. It’s the moment that explains the whole book, a life organized so completely around duty that even a father’s death has to wait its turn. This is the list’s sideways entry, a household shaped by loyalty and silence, but the family cost is right there if you know where to look.

Two Afghan women, different generations, bound together by a war that reorganizes their lives without ever asking their permission. Hosseini is interested in what conflict does to women specifically: how war and domestic control interlock, and what survival looks like from inside a house rather than on a battlefield. The novel covers decades of Afghan history and stays relentlessly on the ground level throughout. It’s the book that made me think most carefully about the women in war narratives who are usually just in the background.

June Han loses her family in the Korean War. At an orphanage after the fighting, her life becomes entangled with an American veteran and a missionary, each carrying a different history of loss. Lee follows them across decades, through the war and the lives that follow. This novel is less well known than it should be.
